Specials

Specials

Whole child education is important at Collegiate Academy, and our Elementary students have a daily Specials block built into their schedules to ensure a well-rounded experience. Students in grades K-6 participate in 3-day rotations of Art, Music, Computer Science and Physical Education. All specials integrate content from the core classrooms whenever possible so that core concepts are reinforced and that art, music, physical activity, and use of technology are woven throughout students’ academic lives.

ART

The art specials program is designed to teach students the basic principles of art & design, while allowing them ample opportunity to create and discover a variety of artistic media and styles. Art is grounded in the work of historic artists as students develop the skills to unleash the power of their inner artist. Collegiate is fortunate to have a ceramics room complete with pottery wheels and glass & ceramics kilns, allowing students to explore clay as well as painting, drawing and mixed media projects.

 CO All State Choir     MUSIC

The music specials program exposes student to a broad range of world music as well as classic and contemporary popular music. Through these examples, students learn musical principles including rhythm, meter, pitch and timbre. Creation of music is also a critical part of the program as students listen to, analyze, make and perform music. Emphasis is placed on vocal as well as instrumental music with traditional as well as non-traditional instruments. Students in grade 4, 5 and 6 also have the unique opportunity to audition and train for Colorado’s elite All State Choir, which performs annually at the Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs.

COMPUTER SCIENCE

Technology is an integral part of our 21st century lives, and the computer science program is designed to prepare students with the skills to excel in that world. Students learn to use business and cloud applications in an integrated model with core ELA, math, science and social studies classes. They also learn developmentally appropriate coding using Scratch, Python and other languages which also reinforce math and logic skills. Collegiate Academy also participates in the annual Hour of Code event.

     Technology Special
 Physical Education Special      PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Collegiate’s physical education program is designed to promote movement, physical activity, and healthy lifestyle in addition to athletic skills. Students learn the rules and skills for a variety of team sports, including basketball, volleyball, soccer and ultimate frisbee, as well as individual sports and fitness activities. We are fortunate to have both a full-size dedicated gymnasium and also a state of the art artificial turf field, allowing students to exercise in the fresh air year-round in Colorado’s mild climate.

LIBRARY

Fostering a love of reading and development of literacy skills is important at Collegiate. Elementary classes are scheduled to visit Collegiate’s library on a weekly basis in order to check out fiction and non-fiction texts for leisure and classroom reading. Because our library is a part of the Jefferson County Schools Library System, students have access to dozens of library collections around the county through inter-library loan.
